My Immodest Proposals for Sports Tournaments
I waste a fair amount of my time concocting tournament formats that I think
should be used for various league championships and the like. They're usually
not quite as
nutty as they might seem (for all my counteradvertising),
and many of them I seriously think should be at
least tried, but this is as much as anything a provocation to thought.
You're welcome to email me with
your responses or your own ideas; I will probably not like them, but, on the
off chance that I do, I may post them here, with credit where appropriate.
Many of my ideas involve seeding, so it seems there might be some call for
a little bit of discussion of rankings and so forth.
Unfortunately, I seem to have become not only more mathematical, which does
not disappoint me, but overly pedantic and heavy in my writing style for
these discussions, which does disappoint me. It seems that I should be able
to write them in such a way that, even if the mathematics is out of the reach
of the reader, the ideas are still relatively clear, and I don't think the
way I've written these at this point is terribly inviting. I apologize, and
I hope to rewrite them sometime.
